UP Diliman marked this year’s UP Foundation Day with a two-part celebration.  The festivities, led by the Office of the Chancellor thru the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts commenced with a special flag-raising ceremony on 18 June 2014, and concluded with an outdoor dance concert at the same venue on 20 June 2014.

The special flag-raising ceremony titled “Sayaw-Galaw UP” featured an early morning (7:30am) parade around the Academic Oval participated  by UP Diliman and System officials, faculty, staff, students – varsity teams, performing groups, the UP Pep Squad and the UP ROTC Symphonic Band. UP President Alfredo E. Pascual and UP Diliman Chancellor Michael L. Tan welcomed the parade participants as they arrived at the Oblation Plaza.  Soon after this, President Pascual gave a special message, then there was lively community dancing led by the UP Pep Squad.  The UP and National flags were raised in a special ceremony with the UP Rayadillo, UP ROTC Symphonic Band, assisted by UP Diliman Vice-Chancellors Dr. Fidel R. Nemenzo (Research and Development), Dr. Neil Martial R. Santillan (Student Affairs), Dr. Nestor T. Castro (Community Affairs), and Prof. Virginia C. Yap (Administration).  At this point, Chancellor Tan gave a short message and then the audience was treated to special numbers: a “ritwal ng pag-aalay” for the University, a song and dance by Dulaang UP featuring the cast members of their remarkable play “Ang Nawalang Kapatid”; and festive Filipino songs – Ay, ay Pag-ibig! and Musika Medley – by the UP Singing Ambassadors.  The UP Pep Squad went on stage once again to dance and cheer for UP, then for the finale the UP ROTC Symphonic Band played the Happy Birthday Song.  Dr. Jovy M. Peregrino was the master of ceremonies.

The “Alay Sayaw” dance concert also held at the Oblation Plaza featured the UP’s leading dance groups and Dulaang UP.  The UP Dance Company, UP Filipiniana Dance Group, UP Pep Squad, and the UP Streetdance Club performed their award-winning dances in front of the Oblation as symbolic offerings to the University.  These included the cheerdance number of the UP Dance Ensemble (composed of UP Pep Squad and UP Filipiniana Dance Group members) which won 1st place in the recently concluded Philippine National Games.  Also featured were a Flag Retreat led by the UP Rayadillo and the Dulaang UP performing two excerpts from “Ang Nawalang Kapatid” which will be restaged at the Wilfredo Guerrero Theater this coming July.  The festive sunset program’s master of ceremonies was Dr. Jose Wendell P. Capili.
