First Quarter Storm and Diliman Commune Memory Walk in UP Diliman

Touring the landmarks of activism in UP Diliman

September 11 & 18, 2017

8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

AS Lobby

The First Quarter Storm of 1970 and the Diliman Commune of 1971 occurred as a reaction to the worsening economic conditions of the time. These events displayed the response of dissatisfied people who chose activism and militancy amidst threats of political persecution from the Marcos administration.

To celebrate the legacy of these student-led protests, the UP Department of History conducted a memory walk which revisited the key landmarks of activism within the campus. This was in cooperation with the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) and the Office for Initiatives for Culture and the Arts (OICA).

Symposium on Aurelio Tolentino

On October 13, 2017, the country celebrated the 150th birthday of Aurelio Tolentino, award-winning playwright and recognized father of symbolic drama during the American occupation. Tolentino fearlessly wrote works against American imperialism at the beginning of the 20th century. He also inspired writers, mostly actors of satirical, symbolic and allegorical plays against the Ferdinand E. Marcos regime from the ‘70s to the early’ 80s.

A Symposium on this was held on October 19, 2017 at Aldaba Hall, UP Diliman, Quezon City.
